The HUB4NGI Expert Group consist of experts in a variety of key R&D areas relevant to build and grow the Next Generation of the Internet as an Internet capable of overcoming its current limitations and reflecting the European social and ethical values of freedom, openess and interoperability.

The HUB4NGI Expert Group will contribute to identify and indicate R&D priorities for NGI within Horizon 2020 and beyond in the next Framework Programme.

Mathieu d’Aquin

Mathieu d’Aquin is Professor of Informatics specialised in data analytics and semantic technologies at the Insight Centre for Data Analytics of the National University of Ireland Galway. He was previously Senior Research Fellow at the Knowledge Media Institute of the Open University, where he led the Data Science Group. Mathieu is leading research and development activities around the meaningful sharing and exploitation of distributed information. He has worked on applying the technologies coming out of his research, especially Semantic Web/Linked Data technologies, in various domains including medicine, education especially through learning analytics, Smart Cities & the Internet of Things, personal data management, etc.

Sabrina Kirrane

Since September 2015, Sabrina has been employed as a postdoctoral researcher at the Vienna University of Economics and Business and director of the Privacy and Sustainable Computing Lab.  She is also the Scientific Coordinator of the Scalable Policy-awarE linked data arChitecture for prIvacy, trAnsparency and compLiance (SPECIAL) H2020 project which will run from January 2017 to December 2019. Her research interests include: privacy, security, reasoning, querying, data analytics, Semantic Web, and Linked Data.

Christiane Wendehorst

Christiane Wendehorst is Professor of Private Law at the University of Vienna and Vice-President of the European Law Institute (ELI), of which she is also a Founding Member. As an expert of European and national private law with a special focus on contract, consumer protection and conflict of laws, she is a Member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), of the International Academy of Comparative Law (IACL) and of the American Law Institute (ALI).Ms. Wendehorst sits on the boards or advisory boards of various academic bodies and associations and serves in international research groups. She regularly provides expert advice to governments and legislative bodies at a European or national level.

Axel Polleres

Axel Polleres heads the Institute of Information Business of the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Wien) which he joined in September 2013 as a full professor in the area of Data and Knowledge Engineering. Since January 2017, he is also a member of the Complexity Science Hub Vienna Faculty. His research focuses on querying and reasoning about ontologies, rules languages, logic programming, Semantic Web technologies, web services, knowledge management, Linked Open Data, configuration technologies and their applications. He has worked in several European and national research projects in these areas. Axel has published more than 100 articles in journals, books, and conference and workshop contributions; co-organised several international conferences and workshops in the areas of logic programming, Semantic Web, data management, Web services and related topics; and acts/acted as editorial board member for JWS, SWJ and IJSWIS. Moreover, he actively contributed to international standardisation efforts within the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), where he co-chaired the W3C SPARQL working group.

Nozha Boujemaa

Director of Research, advisor to the Chairman and the CEO of Inria in Data Science with concern to the socioeconomic impact of Big Data and fostering AI capabilities. Director of  I2DRIVE “Interdisciplinary Institute for Data Research: Intelligence, Value and Ethics”, French Convergence Institute on Data Science and its Interfaces recently accepted by the French government and founded by academic partners of University Paris-Saclay. Project leader of TransAlgo scientific platform for algorithmic systems transparency and accountability. Scientific Head of IMEDIA research group for over 10 years (till 2010) and the Director of Inria Saclay Research Center for 5 years (till 2015).

Knight of the National Order of Merit, Founding Director of Digital Society Institute (ISN), Elected Member of the Board of Directors of Big Data Value Association, General-chair of European Big Data Value Forum 2017 (Versailles), International Advisor for Japanese Science and Technology Agency Program “Advanced Core Technologies for Big Data Integration”, Member of the board of Data Transparency Lab.

Her domain of expertise covers Large Scale Multimedia Content Search, Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning in the context of Big Data. She develops methods for automatic visual content enrichment, structuring and browsing together with interactive and personalized information retrieval mechanisms based on Semi-Supervised Learning & Active Learning. Her research activities have impact on diverse real-life application domains including web content search, cyber-security, biodiversity, audio-visual archives, and earth observation & satellite images. More recently, she is focusing on responsible and ethical data science.

Pompeo Casanovas

Pompeu Casanovas is Research Professor at La Trobe University (Melbourne). He is also Director of Advanced Research and Professor of Philosophy and Sociology of Law at Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB Faculty of Law), and since 2014 onwards, Honorary Professor at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. His research interests encompass intellectual history, legal theory, anthropology, ethics, AI, and semantic and data analysis.  He is developing regulatory models to implement principles of linked democracy, privacy, and the rule of law (meta-rule of law) on the web of data. At present, he is working on rights, legal compliance and governance in the Australian government-funded Data to Decisions CRC Project, and the EU H2020 Projects TakeDown (cyber-security) and LYNX (knowledge graph of legal and regulatory data).  He belongs to the scientific board of several associations and serves as general co-editor of three scientific publications (at Springer, de Gruyter, and Cornell).

Dirk Trossen

Dr. Dirk Trossen is a Senior Principal Engineer at InterDigital Europe, the European branch of InterDigital Inc. Dirk has more than 20 years of experience in network architectures, services and wireless technology. He is currently leading the 5G networking efforts in the International Labs of InterDigital in London. He is currently technical leading the European efforts FLAME, POINT and RIFE, developing novel service routing solutions for upcoming 5G networks. Prior to joining InterDigital, Dirk was co-founder of TecVis LP, a UK-based software solution company in the mobile, context-aware solution space and he held prior positions as a Senior Researcher with Cambridge University, Chief Researcher with BT Research and as a Senior Principal Scientist at Nokia Research. He is also a research affiliate with the Advanced Network Architecture group at MIT CSAIL. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Technical University of Aachen, Germany. He published more than 80 peer-reviewed papers in international conferences and journals and has currently more than 35 international patents.

Oscar Corcho

Oscar Corcho is Full Professor at Departamento de Inteligencia Artificial (ETSI Informáticos, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid), and belongs to the Ontology Engineering Group. He was previously a Marie Curie research fellow at the University of Manchester, and has co-founded Localidata, a company focused on providing support on open data for public administrations. His research activities are focused on the application of semantic technologies to a variety of domains, with a strong focus on open data publishing and usage, and data integration, as well as on different aspects of Open Science. He was recently awarded the Juan López de Peñalver award by the Royal Academy of Engineering in Spain, for his contributions as a young researcher in these areas.

Angelo Corsaro

Angelo Corsaro, Ph.D. is Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at ADLINK Technology Inc. As CTO he leads the  Advanced Technology Office (ATO) and looks after corporate technology strategy and innovation.  Angelo is a well-known and cited expert in the area of high performance and large scale distributed systems, IoT, Edge/Fog Computing.  He is a well published author with well over 100 of publications on referred journal, conferences, workshops, and magazines. Angelo is the funder and co-chair of the DDS Special Interest Group,  a member of the OMG Board of Directors and a member of the ECC Technical Advisory Board.

Pierre-Yves Danet

Pierre-Yves Danet is graduated from a high French engineer school EFREI and has joined Orange (France Telecom) in 1992 taking the responsibility of a research group on ISDN. He setup a lab on Home Automation and then move to application server research domain. In 2005, at the creation of the NEM European Technology platform, he was representing Orange at the steering board and was appointed vice-chair in charge of Strategy since 2007. In 2010, he received the Senior grade of SEE (Société de l’Electricité, de l’Electronique et des Technologies de l’Information et de la Communication). Since 2013, he is in charge of collaborative research – Europe at Orange Labs. Also vice-chair of FIWARE Mundus committee which has the objective to evangelise FIWARE outside Europe. He is also leading the ETNO Research & Innovation group and represents Orange at the AIOTI.
